"Early Spring" Fishing

Man! It has been a cold winter! However, it looks like over the next ten days we'll be having a nice warming trend with overnight lows in the 50's and 60's (rather than the 30's and 40's that we've become accustomed to). This should really help to boost water temps back up and really get the fishing going again just in time for spring break. The cold has certainly not kept us off the water, and we're still catching fish. The reds are packed into tight schools that you can see pushing water around on the flats. Stealth is the key to get close to these fish. Throwing a fly into the middle of one of these schools is quite a sight! It's always fun to see a group of fish fighting to get to your fly! The light tackle spin fishing has been especially productive. Well placed soft plastics have resulted in some truly explosive strikes. If you're coming down for spring break, the fishing is shaping up to be excellent as long as we keep having more warm sunny days!

What a difference a week makes!!!

Last Friday I poled over seemingly empty very cold (46 degree) flats in hopes to catch some fish after a brutal thirteen day run of sub freezing weather. In ONE week, the water temp has risen up to ten degrees in some places. The fish this morning were pushing in big schools often crashing bait! Not only were they crashing bait, but they were busy rooting in the grass for crabs showing some big tails as well. We caught several redfish this morning. Our expectations, as far as what the fishing would be like, were blown away. We caught the reds on a small shrimp imitation that I use made out of a material called poly bear. And, my friend Andy knocked them dead with a soft plastic fluke. I'm so happy to report that good fishing is back on the flats!!
